This wine-tasting guided tour is one of the most popular ones on Malta. Wine is an integral part of the Maltese culture.
The Three Cities offers an intriguing insight into Malta and its history. Left largely unvisited, these cities are a slice of authentic life as well as a glimpse into Malta’s maritime fortunes. The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history, as Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua have provided a home and fortress to almost every people who settled on the Islands.
The grapes are grown in Malta’s hot and humid climate and ripen much quicker than their counterparts further north. Wineries are careful to grow varieties suited to the distinct limestone terroir. Do not miss trying the local wine!
Wine Tasting Tour Description
Cospicua (The 1st of The Three Cities)
The Three Cities, in Malta, is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea. During this guided tour, you will drive past Cospicua, a double-fortified harbour city and the largest of the three. It was also given a title as Citta’ Cottonera, but erroneously the title is now used to define the whole region.
Vittoriosa (The 2nd of The Three Cities)
You will then arrive in Vittoriosa, which has developed a very long history of maritime, mercantile, and military activities. Before the establishment of Valletta as the capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour.
Senglea (The 3rd of The Three Cities)
The third city – Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta, because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The name Senglea was given by the grandmaster who built it, Claude De La Single. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape.
During this guided tour, you will walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic churches and buildings in Malta.
Razzett l Antik & Wine Tasting
Shortly after that is the wine tasting coming. You will get to the Razzett l Antik in Qormi. The wine-tasting tour commences with a historical introduction amongst original artefacts, followed by an explanation about the process of how the locally grown grapes are pressed, fermented, and eventually transformed into wine. The wine sampling is held in the Razzett l Antik wine bar, where trained staff guide guests through a wine-tasting session to sample different wines accompanied by a selection of local savouries like Maltese bread and cheese.
